《澳聯社》（AAP）24日報導，為援救一名身在南極研究站、急需治療的澳洲考察員，中國、澳洲及美國共三國團隊聯手合作，期間出動輪船、直升機與飛機跨越數千公里，花了5天才完成醫療撤離任務。

救援當下，該名不適患者位在南極大陸東部內陸的戴維斯研究站（Davis research station），但由於澳洲飛機並未備有滑雪裝備，只能向美國請求援助。美國便援請一架巴斯勒運輸機（Basler）準備啟程。而中國破冰船正好航經戴維斯附近的中國研究站，為方便美國飛機降落，幾位澳洲考察員便搭乘破冰船的直升機出發、飛往內陸約40公里處挖鑿兩條滑雪道。

而後，美國運輸機便自南極洲最大科學研究中心麥克默多站（McMurdo research station）起飛，遠赴2200公里遠、位在凱西研究站（Casey station）附近的澳洲威爾金斯機場（Australia’s Wilkins Aerodrome），先載了一名澳洲隨行醫生後，再折返至戴維斯接該名病患，期間來回航程長達2800公里。

所幸患者在醫師照護下，已在耶誕前夕24日，由澳洲空中巴士A319接回澳洲塔斯馬尼亞州荷伯特治療。澳洲南極考察隊分隊長艾利斯（Kim Ellis）也形容，這次為近年醫療撤離行動中最複雜與艱難的一次，堪稱「南極洲最出色的多國聯合行動」。
