《英國廣播公司》（BBC）報導，英國埃塞克斯郡（Essex）警方稍早證實，他們數小時前在轄區一處工業區內，發現一輛疑似來自東歐保加利亞的貨櫃卡車，在其貨櫃內發現39具遺體。同時，車上年僅25歲、來自北愛爾蘭的卡車駕駛也隨即遭到逮捕拘留。

經過一天搜查，英國警方證實，指稱貨櫃內所發現的39具屍體，全數都是中國國籍的「移民」，其中31人是男性、8人是女性，警方持續對昨日拘留的25歲司機進行偵訊，希望能挖出更多訊息和蛛絲馬跡。

中國駐比利時使館發言人回應《環球時報》表示，他們高度關注、有關在英國發現39具中國公民屍體的貨車案件，並已要求比利時警方等相關部門，展開全面調查，未來將密切追蹤案件調查進展。而中國外交部則表示，目前暫時沒有更多宣告可告知。

經過檢視與查證後，英國警方認為、這輛卡車是註冊於保加利亞，實際從比利時的澤布呂赫（Zeebrugge, Belgium）出發，輾轉來到埃塞克斯郡的工業區。

為能盡快送交法醫檢驗，發現貨櫃的警員立即呼叫多輛救護車和支援。經過初步判定，39具遺體中有38具屬於成人、1具是未成年者，但他們來自何處、背景因素和性別，仍需等待當地警察查驗才知道。

英國公路運輸協會執行長表示，那個裝有39具屍體的貨櫃，應該是裝設有冷凍設備的款式，櫃內最低溫可達攝氏-25度。而稍早保加利亞外交部也對外證實，此輛紅色貨運卡車是註冊在該國東部城市。

當地警方也向媒體表示，經查證、該輛卡車應該是來自保加利亞，有通過威爾斯霍利希德港（Holyhead）入境的紀錄。若按照合理推測，很可能更之前是藉由船運，先前往愛爾蘭首都都柏林，再搭乘運輸船進入威爾斯，藉此躲避查驗日趨嚴格的加萊-多佛（Calais- Dover）關卡。

對此可怕的犯罪，英國首相強森（Boris Johnson）稍早已表示，將下令警方與調查單位深入追查，勢必抓出造成這有如惡魔般案件的兇手。英國國土部已成立專案調查小組，要深入追查、此次悲劇是否也是一次跨國人口販運（human trafficking）的犯罪。

而鄰近的愛爾蘭總理瓦拉德卡（Leo Varadkar）也表示，對此一可怕的悲劇感到遺憾，倘若證實該輛貨櫃卡車曾途經愛爾蘭國土，他們願意給予最大協助，共同偵破這個慘忍的案件。

事實上，不少英國媒體也提到，在此次悲劇發生之前，英國曾在2000年、於多佛港區一處貨櫃內，發現58名來自中國的偷渡客遺體，才讓政府與警方不敢大意，隨即鎖定非法人口販運的方向展開追查。
