被古人稱為「天狗食日」的天文現象日食,主要成形原因是、當月球運行至太陽與地球之間,對地球部份區域的人來看,月球遮住部份或所有來自太陽的光線,看起來猶如太陽被吃掉或消失一般。
一般而言,日食大致分為四種,包括日全食、日環食、日偏食和全環食,其中最特殊的是「全環食」,只有當月球和太陽的位置完全符合下,才能從地球看見剩下一環火圈的太陽。

根據美國航太總署(NASA)的聲明顯示,26日發生的日食現象,居住在歐、亞、非、澳洲等地的民眾,都能看見不同程度的日食,其中台灣則可欣賞到日偏食,最多將有3成面積被遮蔽。而位於西半球的北美洲,則因位置關係,並無法仰望欣賞這天文奇景。
