神學士發言人姆加黑德（Zabihullah Mujahid）證實，「什葉派同胞的一座清真寺發生爆炸」。當地居民告訴《法新社》，攻擊發生在星期五（8日）的祈禱期間，這天是對穆斯林來說是一周最重要的一天。根據流出影片顯示，驚恐的民眾在街上逃竄。

昆都士商人阿洛克扎伊（Zalmai Alokzai）指出，救護車不斷往返事故現場運送死者。他也趕到醫院看是否有捐血需求。數百人聚集在醫院正門口，為死去的家人哭泣，但神學士人員阻止人們聚集，擔憂炸彈案再次發生。

阿米努拉（Aminullah）擔憂兄弟的安危，「聽到爆炸聲後，我趕緊打給他，電話一直未接」。他後來在清真寺找到暈厥的弟弟，趕緊將他送往醫院。

還有一名女教師指出，爆炸案在家裡附近，有幾個鄰居被活活炸死，「16歲的青少年下半身不見了、24歲的年輕人也喪命」。

什葉派佔阿富汗人口的20%，主要是哈札拉族（Hazaras），幾十年一直受到遜尼派極端分子的迫害，不只聚會場所遭到轟炸，醫院成為目標，通勤者也可能突然受到伏擊。
