馬拉威副總統齊里瑪的座機10日上午失蹤，當局出動軍警搜索後，總統查奎拉11日宣布，包括現年51歲的齊里瑪在內，機上10名乘客及機組人員全部罹難。

美聯社報導，查奎拉（Lazarus Chakwera）11日在國營電視台宣布，搜救人員在北部區（Northern Region）首府姆祖祖（Mzuzu）近郊，一處茂密森林中找到飛機殘骸，包括齊里瑪（Saulos Chilima），前第一夫人、前總統莫魯士（Bakili Muluzi）前妻沙尼爾（Shanil Muluzi）在內7名乘客，以及3名來自軍方的機組人員全部遇難。

齊里瑪等人10日上午從首都里朗威（Lilongwe）出發，計畫前往姆祖祖參加前官員的葬禮，結果起飛45分鐘後失聯；查奎拉10日表示，事發時姆祖祖機場塔台曾表示天候不佳，能見度差，建議齊里瑪的座機返回里朗威，但不久後，這架飛機就與航管失聯，從雷達上消失。事發後，里朗威當局派遣600名軍警及當地林務人員在姆祖祖附近的維皮亞山脈（Viphya Mountains）展開搜索，並在隔日尋獲飛機殘骸。

齊里瑪是2014年就任總統的穆薩里卡（Peter Mutharika）的副手，之後在2019年投入總統大選，名列第3，落後於穆薩里卡及查奎拉，結果這場選舉因有違法情事而遭到憲法法院推翻，創下非洲大陸首例，齊里瑪後轉投查奎拉陣營，2020年回鍋出任副總統。

齊里瑪乘坐飛機為德國多尼爾228（Dornier 228），1988年交付馬拉威軍方，據馬拉威反對黨說法，這架飛機並未裝設詢答器。馬拉威人口2100萬，世界銀行（World Bank）的資訊顯示，這是世界上第4貧困的國家。
